The fails of the iPhone 5 just keep coming out of the woodwork. This time it has to do with simultaneous voice and data. Looks like if you are rocking the new iPhone, you will not be able to talk on the phone and access data if you are on 4G LTE Verizon or Sprint network. Oops. Antennagate back again? When will these guys ever learn?
Of course, they failed to mention this little flaw yesterday during the unveiling, and this was all Apple’s decision. Sprint and Verizon had nothing to do with this, and apparently AT&T’s version will not have this problem. It all has to do with the hardware of the phone, and it looks like if they wanted to have simultaneous voice-data they would have to have a third antenna. Maybe the third antenna was going to make the phone look fat?
So, yet again, another fail for the iPhone 5. It is not a huge flaw, but it is the little things that could make or break a person’s decision to purchase the phone. Let us know what you guys think.

where on earth would they put it – is it embedded in the phone or is there an extra attachment? im a bit confused…
Point is, it can’t do both unless Apple added another antennae for it. No chance for an attachment…. it just won’t work.
No problem in Europe, almost no one will notice it as only one or two carriers support the Apple LTE over here.
They will notice the lack of NFC since that is more popular in Europe
I guess this is the one innovative feature of the iPhone5 that Android phones don’t have.
Actually, I can use data while talking on my Droid Razr. Surprised??
You can talk over GSM and HSPA and 3G! I do on andy.
sorry am i being thick here, but the way this article is written suggests that this problem only exists on the sprint and verizon versions of the phone as it states “and apparently AT&T’s version will not have this problem”.
Now in reading this it doesnt sound as if this is something that apple have done, but more that maybe sprint and verizon wanted cheaper versions of the phone to sell to its customers, whilst AT&T are happy with the full blooded version. Or is it infact not a problem with the phone but with the network of these two providers instead.
It may be me being thick, but i cant understand how Apple could have caused this problem if AT&T versions are not affected as im guessing they have this antena and it only affects two carriers.
The way I understand it, due to how the networks work the iPhone5 won’t do voice/data at the same time. Those carrier models would need an additional antenna. Apple won’t build a model variant to accommodate. So users of the iPhone5 on those carriers are SOL. It is a GMS vs CDMA issue. Apple could easily have solved this by creating one device that did it all, but sure, it would have raised the price a bit. Not that people still wouldn’t have paid for it anyways. It just seems silly that if I get an iPhone5 on AT&T I am good to do everything, but if I go with Verizon or Sprint, I lose one semi important ability that I actually use often. Not many people will really care or even will know the difference.
this is what i mean though, as your saying due to the way the networks work or more to the point the way two of the three networks work. Seems to me more a problem with two of the networks not working with apple to make sure their product will work perfectly with the new phone, whilst one network makes sure it will.
For me this snipping between android and iphone is doing my head in a little bit and is being clouded largely by personal tastes or feelings towards a lot of the products. Here we have an article written by and Android Fan, that intentionally takes a swipe at Apple, when really it may be more to do with two providers trying to save money on the set up and running of their product that causes the Apple product to work fully in everyway. Whilst one supplier has probably spent more on set up of their network and will probably spend more on the running of this network to ensure that it does. But the clouded vision of a die hard Android Fan means that this article is tilted towards how Apple do not give there customers everything rather than it being aimed at the service providers who by the sounds of it are offering a 4G budget network rather than a full blooded and perfect model that the could have offered if they had wanted to.
And unfortunately for someone like me these articles dont help us decide what upgrade to buy and indeed when to upgrade. I will admit i am an apple 3gs user, the phone still works fine though i would like to upgrade to a newer and more improved version of a smart phone. But i have done this before to the HTC Desire HD after reading an article again by an Android Fan that slated the iphone 4 at the time and sung the praises of the desire hd. And what a pile of crap phone i ended up with, crashed all the time, Android Market place useless at the time (not sure if it has improved) build quality was terrible and to be honest it was not a cheap phone. So i returned to the old faithful and fully functioning 3gs, only to constantly read more articles by either Iphone Fans slating Android offerings or by Android Fans Slating the iphone and telling us all that the Anroid way is the future.
Are there any articles out there that are actually based on truth and are helpful to people like me waiting to upgrade but not interested in cost or street cred but more about if the product works and how good it is. If any one knows of an article like this then please reply and point me in the right direction
The problem is with the ohine. Iphone uses the 3g technology when making phone calls. So when you make a call the iphone5 rolls back to old technology. The att network had 3g capable of voice and data. So when you are on a call with att you lose your 4g because they do not have the dedicated 4g antennas like the android phines. It is most definitely a hardware problem from apple
Seriously, how many times when on a “phone call” are you flipping about on the Internet (eg. web browsing, I assume?)? Huh?? I think that is a less than 1% customer base, at a wild guess?. I rarely see people actually doing this in the wild?
It is used more often than a lot of people may think. Especially in the business world. When you need to access files or e-mail while on a call and in various industries, when needing to load navigation or be rerouted during a call. Your phone needs data access for these things. I would have problems with the limited usage 4+ times a day. But perhaps I use my phone or many of these features more than most.
They didn’t do it cuz by the end of the year it’ll be a useless antenna. Voice and data with both be on LTE. AT&T customer can use voice and data straight out of the box. Verizon and sprints CDMA is just old tech.
Makes me glad I’m AT&T…
People will still be able to talk and browse web if on WiFi. I think people make a big deal out of material things. It’s not that serious! I have the phone and am perfectly fine with not being able to talk and browse at the same time. I have Sprint and guess what? I will take my UNLIMITED data over that any day! Wake up people!
To be honest, I can’t see a huge difference between decent 3G and LTE in practice. If it’s a big deal, then they can always adjust next year’s phone right?
If you like Android, why bother coming on and bitching about iphones? Sounds like a bunch of losers complaining to me… people who OWN iphones have a right to complain about their products not doing what they want – and the others should juz go away and play with their plastic toys.
Well have to agree to you, only see Android fanboi complaining about iphone all day in all kinds of forum, yet how often would 1 see apple fanboi complain about android phone? S3 and iPhone 5 owner here. unless you own both phone else you are just crying coz the other phone is better and you complain for the sake of complaining. in my country NFC is like 0.1% yet everyone crazy over this useless thing, maybe a few years time but by than S7 or S8? stupid people.
When did this guy ever say anything about Android?
Sprint and version has never been able to do it with apple now all of the sudden it’s an issue
It sounds like this was written by an android fanboy just waiting to jump on apple case every chance they get. We get it already you don’t like apple, that doesnt change the fact that they are the most lucrative high end electronics company ever. So they are obviously doing something right
It wasn’t an issue before because everyone knew with that CDMA 3G technology didn’t support that. It’s a problem now because if you get any other Verizon LTE phone, you get the simultaneous voice and data.
Both the SGS3 and EVO LTE can do simultaneous voice and data over 3G on Sprint, they overcame this previous limitation of CDMA. They’ve been able to do this since their release. I have an EVO LTE and use this feature quite a bit actually, especially on Bluetooth. It’s really helpful when I’m trying to navigate somewhere and someone calls me or in the case of my one car with a sporadic speedometer, I can keep using a GPS speedometer app without interruption.
Who cares they will fix it not a big deal and if it is to you don’t buy the phone
It’s not an iphone design flaw. It works on my Carriers LTE network. I use it all the time. This article must have been written by a hater.
I have att and iPhone 5. I can talk on speaker and text at the same time. Also use other apps, like Google, to find where my friends are all while talking…no biggie
