[Op-Ed] How major game developers upset my Samsung Galaxy S III Purchase

14

OK, some of you may already know that I finally had a chance to move away from little Samsung Vibrant and picked up a Samsung Galaxy S III. Normally I would go through how utterly amazing the device is and show you all some video. I will still do that later today, but first I have to get something off my chest and make a rather disappointing showing about the Galaxy S III.

Before I show you what I found, I want to be perfectly clear, this has nothing to do with Samsung, the Galaxy S III or splendor of the device. It has everything to do with developers. Not the average team, small group, small company, or one man show. This is specifically aimed at the major gaming companies. Primarily, Electronic Arts and Gameloft, for the time being. Take a look at a few screenshots.

As you can see, I have a lot of games that I have purchased that aren’t compatible with my device. This is extremely frustrating, for me at least. How can two extremely large and well established game developing companies not make updates to existing titles to run on one of the hottest selling devices on the market right now? Now not every game by these guys comes up as incompatible. N.O.V.A. 3 works and NBA Jam works. It isn’t so much the point of what will play and what won’t play, it is more the point that games that should have no issue on the Galaxy S III can’t even be installed.

Now I am sure that with a tweaked ROM, rooted and some little changes then the Play Store won’t pickup my device and let me install them. I bet they play smooth and work perfectly. It is more about the consumers experience that i am worried about. We know this has no bearing on Samsung and the Galaxy S III and is more about the developers, but to the average user who sees this, they will blame it on their device and Samsung.

So what is a consumer to do? Well, we can bitch and complain to each other, but that won’t get us anywhere. I know change won’t happen without people standing up for it. So I propose two things. First, if you have a Galaxy S III, or even if you don’t but see the same issue on a major selling device, you fire off an email to them expressing your dissatisfaction. You can email Gameloft at android.support@gameloft.com as for Electronic Arts, they make it a bit more tricky from what I can tell. You can tweet them at http://twitter.com/ea or bug them on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/EA. Sending them an email doesn’t seem to be very simple. Second, +1 this article in Google Plus. Blow up their feed with your comments.

Feel free to list any other games or apps you have run across that you have spent your hard-earned money on to only end up not being able to use it again.

Time for an update. I am the proud father of three, 2, 8, and 11. I finally just moved up from the Samsung Vibrant to the Samsung Galaxy S III...... Let me tell you, it is mind blowing. I love Android, I love tech and I love my family. Not in that order though. I work to hard, play even harder and take care of all that are around me when I can.

the problem is these are games NOT apps and are done with updates after a very short while. they are not apps and are not gonna be updated on a weekly or montly basis since there huge, there only optimized for a time being then move on to the sequel. look at nova 2 that game is old and hasnt been updated since last year cuz they want u to buy the newest one nova 3. i know it sucks cuz (gameloft is a big time offender of this. most of there old games are incompatible with nexus7) i wanted to play 9mm on my wifes nexus7 but i cant cuz that game is old and hasnt been updated to work on the latest android version.

EA makes it very difficult to get a hold of them once they’ve taken your money. To buy an app from them and to pay them is as simple as one easy click. But after they took me on three games, I decided to dig a little deeper. Their web site has several ways to contact them. They all lead you to forums, FAQ, and a whole labyrinth of false leads. Once you get to the point where you can send them an email, they send you a form letter reply leading you back to the steps you’ve already taken, back to the FAQ’s and forums. If you contact them via the Play Store, same thing. It’s a never ending circle and actually reaching someone is not a reality. It’s no wonder that they received the title of: “America’s Worst Company.” They truly earned it and they continue to work hard to maintain that status!

Oh you bought a S3 finally. Congrats, welcome to the next generation!

Dead Space does work on my S3. There seems to be quite a few other user reviews in the Play Store from other S3 users also.

Hmmm. Which version of S III you using and did you get it from the Play Store or a patched copy.

I couldn’t find Nova 2 but i should note that i got gt racing from the mobile gameloft website despite the fact that the play store says it isn’t compatible with my GSIII. I don’t understand why that is the case but it worked. Frustrating enough the free GT racing is calibrated better than Asphalt 7 which is an awesome game but the calibration continually messes up WHILE YOUR DRIVING. Almost makes the game pointless since it often causes you to lose… anywho try to search the gameloft website for your games and maybe you’ll be in luck but i guess for the ones you already own its a no go…

btw i have North American version of gsiii.

I got the game from Play Store, it’s great – on par with Shadow Gun.
It’s a UK phone, so I guess that makes it the international version.

I paid for bejeweled 2 last year while still using My galaxy mini … incompatible with My new sgs3

I transferred the apk between phones and the game loads on the s3, but crashes before you can play

however the latest ota update changed something, cuz it now plays fine, altho stutters abit with sound effects and music

they will prolly release bejeweled 3, overpriced as usual.. before they bother, IF they bother, to update My version

garbage companies like EA and gameloft make huge, pretty, shiny games that have crappy controls and game play.. they only look good .. they charge 3-5 times the price of normal games because they know they won’t update, they know sales will peter out .. they are simply trying to grab as much money from suckers that buy dbased on pretty advertising videos and hype

needless to say, I was really pissed off when garbage like EA bought the quality company PopCap .. makers of bejeweled, plants vs zombies, zuma and more
