Another year has passed and what a year it was for Android gaming!
Over the last year we’ve seen major players such as Rockstar games, Invictus and SEGA bring their latest and greatest games to Android within a few days of their iOS counterparts
We’ve seen past developers like EA and GameLoft continue to bring over their fantastic back catalog with great ports of games from iOS
And along with all these major cross platform developers we’ve also seen amazing releases from smaller studios such as Orange Pixel, Vector Unit, Politbit, Origin 8 and many, many more.

We don’t always have the time to give all of these amazing games the attention they deserve throughout the year so let us take a small step to solving that right now and bring you: AndroidSPIN’s top games of 2011

Racing

2011 has given us some great looking and great feeling racers. Last year we saw the insane platforming racer Jet Car Stunts in our top five games of the year and this year we’ve got some far more serious games that are just as worthy.

Top 3 Nominees

Real Racing 2

Electronic Arts Inc.

Just about as serious as a racing game gets, if you’re looking for a mobile
game that comes close to the depth of Forza or Gran Turismo then it’s worth
trying out the free mode in Real Racing 2.

Need for Speed Hot Pursuit

Electronic Arts Inc.

If racing away from the cops in a souped up sports car doesn’t grab your
interest then how about chasing down those lowly racers in your equally as
powerful police cruiser. What Hot Pursuit might lack in realism it makes
up for by just being a lot of fun.

Riptide GP

Vector Unit

Stunning visuals and superb water effects make Riptide GP look like a tech
demo, but the excellent level design and sense of motion also make Riptide
GP a unique game to play.

Winner!

Real Racing 2

Electronic Arts Inc.

The level of depth in Real Racing 2 is unmatched. Along with the visuals
and tightness of the controls this feels like a full console experience
right on your phone.

Also consider:

Asphalt 6: Adrenaline HD

Shine Runner

Strategy

The list of great strategy games is a little thin on Android compared to the other genres on this list. Most strategy dependent games are more of an RPG or a puzzle game, but there are still some great games out there, and here are our top three!

Top 3 Nominees

Great Little War Game

Rubicon Development

The overly classic style of gameplay might turn away players but Great
Little War Game’s a quick and easy strategy game to pick up and it still
has the depth to keep you coming back for more

Plants Vs Zombies

Electronic Arts Inc.

One of Popcap Game’s greatest strengths is their ability to polish a game
until its gone beyond shiny and PvZ is no exception. Classy and humorous
visuals along with a wacky story and challenging levels makes for a great
combination

Sentinel 3: Homeworld

Origin8 Technologies Ltd.

The Tower defense game type has been a little played through, but Sentinel 3
is one of the finest examples of the genre.

Winner!

Plants Vs Zombies

Electronic Arts Inc.

It’s hard to beat Popcap when they sat out to do something
and Plants vs Zombies executes its goals so perfectly that
it’s hard to think of any way in which it could be improved.

Also consider:

Catan

Kairosoft

There are so many Kairosoft games released this year that they’ve practically created their own sub-genre of simulation games. Even though many of these games have started to get overly similar, there’s some definite winners in this group.

Top 3 Nominees

Epic Astro Story

Kairosoft Co.,Ltd

The most recent un-ported Kairosoft game is set in space with some overly
overt and almost constant Star Trek references in its character names.
The setting is interesting and it’s great to go exploring with Wes Smasher.

Grand Prix Story

Kairosoft Co.,Ltd

Building your own racing car and watching it whiz around the track makes
Grand Prix Story perhaps the most visually enjoyable game in the Kairosoft
series.

Mega Mall Story

Kairosoft Co.,Ltd

Only just released by the year’s end, Mega Mall Story is more than a little
bit of a throwback to the fantastic Sim Tower/Yoot Tower games and it’s
also the most unique Kairosoft game to date.

Winner!

Epic Astro Story

Kairosoft Co.,Ltd

Perhaps we’re just a sucker for the space setting, or perhaps it’s the
humorous references, but Epic Astro story makes you actually curious
about what you’ll see next, rather than just going through the motions
of some of their other titles.

Also consider:

World Cruise Story

Pocket League Story

Action

More than just shooters, action games cover just about any game where you take direct control of a character that doesn’t fall into one of the other genre buckets and the three games we have for you here are some of the most amazing games that have ever been seen on Android.

Top 3 Nominees

Samurai II: Vengeance

MADFINGER Games, a.s.

The flow of the combat in Samurai II is just as great as the comic book
art style is striking.

Grand Theft Auto 3

Rockstar Games, Inc.

They said it couldn’t be done, or at least they might have. A fantastic
port of one of the most important games in history that’s still offers
great mindless fun and an over the top story.

Reckless Getaway

polarbit

I’ve thrown the word fun around a lot here, but few games take the essence
of raw fun quite like Reckless Getaway. It’s incredible simple, not so
deep and just raw fun.

Winner!

Grand Theft Auto 3

Rockstar Games, Inc.

It’s almost unfair to list one of the greatest games of all time in this
or any other category. Grand Theft Auto III’s port is near perfect and
it’s a great example of how on screen controls can be done right.

Also consider:

Spirit HD

Peggle

Age of Zombies

Shooter

There was a time when people couldn’t imagine playing shooters on consoles and moving from the keyboard and mouse towards game controllers. Now we’re going through that same cycle again with touch based games and while the technology still has a little way to go we’re starting to see the technology really coming in to its own.
Here’s our varied list of our top three shooters of the year.

Top 3 Nominees

Dead Space

Electronic Arts Inc.

Dead Space on Android isn’t a port of the PC and console versions but it
also wasn’t treated like a B list game. The story fits in with Dead Space
cannon and the entire game was given the attention it deserved.

Shadowgun

MADFINGER Games, a.s.

Shadowgun is nothing if not technically impressive. Even attempting to
emulate a game in the style of Gears of War is an incredible undertaking
and Shadowgun is amazing able to pull off a great part of the feel of that
style of combat.

Modern Combat 3

GAMELOFT

Gameloft like to go big and with the most recent entry in Modern Combat
they did just that. The single player story is enjoyable with its completely
off the wall story but the real accomplishment is the accessibility of the
multiplayer

Winner!

Dead Space

Electronic Arts Inc.

It’s amazing that Dead Space captures the tense atmosphere of the console
games without feeling like you’re getting any less than the full experience.
A great story and the interesting combat make Dead Space a fantastic
experience

Also consider:

N.O.V.A. 2

9mm

Platformer

Perhaps the hardest category to judge each year is that of the platformer mostly because of the sheer number of high quality games that appear every year, so be sure to check out our “Also consider” list at the bottom for some absolute stunners that barely missed the top three.

Top 3 Nominees

Robot Unicorn Attack

[adult swim] games

Robot Unicorn Attack is one of the original auto scrolling mobile
platformers and it’s kooky premise, colorful visuals and unending playing
of Erasure come together in a way that few games achieve.

Sonic CD

SEGA of America

Heralded by some as the greatest Sonic game that Sega ever created. Sonic’s
first adventure on Android turns out to be (after a rocky start) one of the
best versions of this classic game

Cordy

SilverTree Media

If you’re looking for a cutesy, amazingly well animated platformer then
Not just a perfect port of the amazing Sega CD game, but it also improves
on it. Different soundtracks, an unlockable character and no jarring load

Puzzle

It’s quite amazing that after many years of puzzle games across multiple systems that developers can still come up with such unique ideas for this genre, even though two of these nominees focus around water.

Sprinkle

Mediocre

It might come across as a water tech demo for Nvidia with some puzzle
elements added on as afterthoughts, but the levels are enjoyable and the
later ones start to get downright devious.

2D BOY

World of Goo

2D BOY

World of Goo is a classic game which might not feel as original as it did
back in ’08 but it’s level design is near perfect and the gameplay feels
like it was designed for touch screens.

It was a hard choice deciding if we should even have a free category, but we feel that as we don’t create full reviews for free games (you can just go out and try them) that we need a place to celebrate some of the great releases that we’ve seen over the past year.
Is the two button control method of games such as Robot Unicorn attack bringing you down? Because Whale Trail is now on Android, with half the buttons and twice the delight.

Is a platform game still a platform game when you get rid of the platforms? Perhaps not, but what if you’re scrolling from left to right, collecting objects and avoiding enemies by pressing a single button to go upwards? Trying to put today’s games into genres could drive a man mad! Whale Trail might not be the first game to bring a single button control method to Android, in fact I believe we took a look a look at The Impossible Game a couple of years ago, which showed us just how tough a game with a singe input could be. Difficulty isn’t the selling point of Whale Trail, although it can become quite challenging, the biggest treat that it has to offer is its experience.

Saying the experience of a game is its biggest feature is rather vague, but Whale Trail is the type of game that is more than just the sum of its parts and if you break it down too far it stops making sense. Although in actuality, there’s already very little sense in Whale Trail. You are in control of Willow the whale who’s flying through Rainbow Land to escape Barron Von Barry. So the story is total nonsense, not that you’ll find any story once the game begins anyhow. You can’t have such a bizarre story without the visuals to back it up and sure enough there’s evil clouds with faces on; happy clouds with faces on; a colorful mountain range in the background, also with faces on and so many colors, as if someone cranked the psychedelic dial up to 11. The graphics are just as much nonsense as the story, so is the music just as nonsensical? Well, here’s a sample of the lyrics: “Ain’t no riots in the sky – Just a riot of color – That lasts forever”, so, check!

Guiding Willow through the riot of color in the sky is simple: Press on the screen to tilt him up, keep holding on the screen and he’ll do a loop-the-loop. You won’t be flying aimlessly through the sky as you’ll need to collect sky bubbles for whale fuel (Did I mention the story was bizarre?). Running out of fuel will cause Willow to fall out of the sky and I can’t imagine what multicolored horrors that would cause on the land below. There are also storm clouds in the sky that will reduce your fuel if you collide with them unless you’ve collected enough stars to gain temporary invincibility, then you can smash through them for extra points. The endless mode eases you in on each play-though with few clouds and plenty of fuel, but eventually you’ll be scrambling for enough fuel to continue and carefully steering Williow through tight passages between walls of clouds.

If you’re looking for a more structured experience there’s 32 challenge missions that are unlocked after earning a small score in the classic mode. These challenges require you to reach a score milestone by the end of an area in order to win up to three stars. These stars are then used to unlock more challenge levels, which begins to get quite difficult around the high teens when you start to require a higher than two star average to unlock further levels. To reach three stars on many levels requires nothing short of perfection, which feels against the ‘spirit’ of the rest of the game’s feel good charm. There’s nothing wrong with a challenge, but when you can pay a couple of dollars through an in-app purchase to unlock the rest then the difficulty feels a little more insidious.

There’s a few technical hiccups that are worth mentioning. Firstly the frame rate isn’t as stable as it should be for a game so simple and secondly when there is a lot going on then the game simply freezes for a a second or two. Hopefully these issues can be patched out, but for now they can make some difficult situations even more challenging. Performance issues aside. Whale Trail is a nonsense game that’s a lot of fun to play. Beautiful, beautiful nonsense.

Well, don’t touch that dial, because I’ve got a splendid finding to share with you this evening.

fergie716 put together an amazing post over on XDA that provides info and links to some of the hottest status bar mods for many ICS ROMs already available, including Koush’s “CM9″, HTC Clay’s “Super ICS” and Brainmaster’s “ICS Mix” to name a few.

These mods will allow you to change the look of your status bar. You can center your clock, center your clock with the battery symbol, or roll with just the battery symbol if you prefer. There’s also a mod for oICS v21 and CM9 CDMA that brings onscreen buttons, lockscreen rotation, and ICS Blue in the drop-down status bar.

The installation process isn’t too tricky, but I still recommend making a backup before you head over to fergie716′s thread on XDA for the instructions and files you’ll need. While you’re there, please make sure to hit the thanks button for the post.

After the news that GIT Media Group was launching what seemed like a dream tablet to the world, people started to wonder if this was a scam or joke of some kind. If we didn’t know the people we know, we would have thought the same thing. With two new high-end tablets to choose from, both sporting dual-core chips and 250GB Seagate hard drives, a person might start drooling. Add in the known fact of them both being under $500 really sweetens the deal. I had a chance to sit down with one, if only for a brief amount of time, and get a little more insight for everyone that wasn’t available on the release or the website initially.

The look and feel of the device is amazing. Weighing only slightly more than the Galaxy tab10.1 at 22oz, and being only .11 inches thicker, it really is sleek. I like sleek devices, but more importantly, I like to know the details. We have all seen some great looking tablets in the past that just couldn’t perform or were stuck on old software with no chance of updates. You can judge the looks your self via the images we were able to snap. Lets get down to some of the more important things we all want to know.

One of the first and most important things we were able to confirm, both tablets will support the Android market. So no fears of getting your hands on a great tablet that only loads third-party apps. As we mentioned in the previous post, it looked like the tablet has HDMI out. We were also able to confirm this as well. They will support full 1080p HDMI out via Mini HDMI. That is a must have feature for any new tablet.

On to the battery. What good is a dual-core powerhouse device without a decent battery to keep the thing powered up and running. You will be pleased to know that they have included a 6000mAh battery in the devices. Which should get you through 8 hours of actual use.

Both tablets will be able to connect to the internet via WiFi, but they have also added in a nice little addition that you all might like to know. They also support a SIM card. Which means you can have 3G connectivity on the tablet when you are out and about by simply popping your data SIM card into the tablet.

The final confirmation that we were able to get comes in the form of the OS. Although the site states they will be launching with Honeycomb 3.0, we have confirmed that the device will in fact be launching with Honeycomb 3.2. That is a sign of relief. That leads us to make a couple of predictions too. Knowing that GIT is trying to not only bring an amazing tablet to the market, but attempting to release as much source as possible for custom ROM support and modifications, I have a sneaking suspicion they are holding back something. Most importantly, Ice Cream Sandwich.

That’s right, I said it. There are a few things that lead me to believe this. The chips they are using in the tablets will easily support ICS. There is plenty of RAM, 1GB. They want to make the tablet developer friendly with open source, and they want to be the first tablet company to do things right. Which, in my opinion, means software updates before the competition. Is it possible? Sure it is, with out all the carrier bloatware installed and all the hoops to jump through to get an update pushed out, they could very well be the first tablet company to see ICS living and breathing in the wild. All the more reason to pick one of these up instead of the Tab or XOOM. This is all pure speculation right now, but if you would like to mark my words on it, go right ahead. I would love to right about this one.

You may have noticed that none of the pictures we took included the device being powered on. Due to current proprietary information, limitations and specific restrictions and requests by GIT, I wasn’t permitted to show the unit in action. Don’t worry, those will come at a later date. I promise, you won’t be disappointed when you do either. I can however confirm that the screen quality is amazing and they have done a great job putting those chips to work. The devices really fly through the OS with ease.

Pre-Orders are still open and you can snag either of the two devices directly from their website, GITCorp, for $479.99.

With the Epic 4G Touch just hitting stores and online retailers today, we would have expected at least a few days before the code came out. We sure as heck aren’t complaining though. This means that the developers can get to work on building us some of those oh so juicy custom ROMs we all love so much. You won’t be seeing one just yet though as the device still has to be rooted first. I do, however, fully expect to see builds popping up in the forums over the next few days for for parts of this being ported to the the Epic 4G and other variants. I can’t wait to see what the devs do with these devices.

If you are interested in getting your hands on the source code, point your browser to Samsungs portal site and search for D710.

Product Description

Now wirelessly charging your Motorola Droid X2 or Droid X is as simple as setting it down! Powermat Complete solutions are pre-packaged bundles pairing a Powermat one position wireless charging mat and a wireless charging receiver to provide a seamless upgrade to wireless charging.

The Powermat 1X Wireless Charging Mat is the perfect solution for wirelessly charging in multiple locations in the home and office. Its small footprint fits almost any corner or even the smallest of nightstands. A magnetic attraction between every Receiver and each access point on every Mat assures that alignment is precise and the most efficient charging will occur. A unique sound tells you that a solid connection has been made and your device is charging. A second, similar sound is heard when the device is removed.

Communication between the Mat and the Receiver (via RFID) allows the mat to deliver an exact amount of power for the proper length of time so that the transfer of power is safe and efficient and no energy is wasted. When a device reaches full charge, power is shut off to that device, which avoids overcharging of the device’s battery as well as saves energy.

Features:

Today is the official launch day of the first U.S. Galaxy S II variant. It will always be a SGS2 to me, but Sprint took the liberty of naming the device the Epic 4G Touch. Boasting its 4.52″ Super AMOLED Plus display, the dual-core 1.2 GHz Exynos processor and Android 2.3.4. With so many features it is hard to say which one I like best. It is sure to fly off the shelves in a hurry.

If the $199.99 price tag is a little steep, you can always pick up the device from us. We have it on special for $149.99 and it will ship out to you on Tuesday the 20th.

Even though many devices are all converting over to the Micro USB to charge their products, there are still many devices that run on a Mini USB. The point is, I have been at many friends houses and needed to charge my phone, only to discover that they have 4 Mini USB chargers lying around but no Micro USB anywhere. Having this little guy attached to my key chain would have solved a lot of my woes. If you have ever been in a similar situation, you might want to consider picking one of these up.

BusyMom Toddler Edition is an App that is just for Moms with Toddlers (ages 1-3). It is available on both the Android Market and the Amazon App Store. BusyMom Toddler Edition claims to be four apps in one. It is divided into four sections: Community, Maps, Stories, and Charts. I’ll briefly cover my experience with each section:

Community: BusyMom Toddler Edition includes a community forum that allows Moms to talk to other Moms and get help or share advice. It’s built right into the App and it’s easy to use. I could definitely see myself jumping on quickly to get an answer to a question. The interface is nice and it’s easy to make a post from my phone.

Maps: Maps for Moms is another section that is included in the App and it’s a neat idea that works well. Basically Maps for Moms allows you to find places near your GPS Location. For example: I went to a city a few hours from where I live and I used the App to help me find a local Coffee Shop. Just open the App, Tap the “Coffee” button and it automatically searches and shows Coffee Shops near my current location. I found this to be extremely helpful. You can also find Restaurants, Malls, Playgrounds, Gas Stations, and WiFi Hotspots.

Stories: This is probably the neatest part of BusyMom Toddler Edition (at least it was for me). They include a section that has a bunch of streaming audio stories that are intended to keep your Toddler occupied. I used this in the car on my way to my Mom’s house the other day. You can hook up your phone to the iPod jack in your car and listen to stores through your car’s speakers. It also works great over the phone’s speaker. I used it last night as a bed-time story for my toddler. The stories are great classics that kept my toddlers attention.

Charts: The App also includes a section with Toddler development charts. You can easily pop over and check out a chart to see how your toddler is progressing. Not the flashiest part of the App, but it got the job done.

Overall I would give this App Five Stars and recommend it to any mom with a toddler age child. The price is amazing considering everything that you get with it. Here’s a link to find it in the Market:

Application: BusyMom Toddler Edition
Cost: $1.99
