Free Fonts for Your Samsung Galaxy S Devices

by Stormy Beach on 18th Aug 2010 -

In my never ending search for fun and useful things to bring to you guys, I have yet again stumbled across something new to share. Over at XDA, I found a thread by jzero88 which is a master list of APK files that, as far as I am aware, were created by users and submitted on XDA. They do not require root access to install, so all you stock users can have some goodies too. I can confirm the files work on the Samsung Vibrant version of the Galaxy S. It should also work on all variants in the U.S. ...

Samsung Captivate Camera for Your Samsung Vibrant

by Stormy Beach on 17th Aug 2010 -

I dug this nice little port from the good guys over at xda-developers. User chaoscentral has created two zip files that are easily flashed through Clockwork recovery. It will flash the Samsung Captivate's camera program to your Samsung Vibrant. Why would anyone want to do this? The UI layout is slightly different and makes getting in to change some settings a lot easier and with fewer steps. Another benefit this brings to your Vibrant includes a much faster response time when starting and stopping video recordings. Here are the instructions: 1. Copy zip to internal SD 2. Reboot into Clockwork MOD recovery 3. Flash zip 4. ...

Ownskin: Personalize And Create Your Own Live Wallpapers

by Stormy Beach on 11th Aug 2010 -

Back in July I brought to your attention an application called Ownskin by madwolfchin, which would allow you to create your own live wall papers. At the time it wasn't fully available and pretty limited, not anymore. The app is now live and the only requirement is that your device is running a version of Android that currently supports live wallpapers. First step is to go to the Android Market and download Ownskin. Second, register an account at Ownskin. Once you are all set up, you can start creating your own masterpieces to be shared with the world. There are many options for you ...

CM6 UI Tweaks – Where Do I Start?

by Stormy Beach on 29th Jul 2010 -

Have no fear, the answers are here. One of AndroidSPIN's contributors, Jason Bowdach, shared a chart with the team today regarding a very nicely done breakdown of what the CM6 UI Tweaks actually do. Being a faithful Cyanogen follower since I rooted my G1, I know that all his tweaks can be a little overwhelming for the first timer. So I thought I would share some of the UI settings. You can locate them from Menu > Settings > CyanogenMod Settings > User Interface. Here's the break down: Power Prompt Lets you skip the confirmation prompt on power off. Render Effect Modifies the screen color.  ...

Livehome, Another Home Replacement Worth a Look.

by Stormy Beach on 26th Jul 2010 -

The beautiful thing about Android, in my opinion, is how truly open and wonderful it is. If you have been around the block a few times or even if you are new to Android, you should all know about home replacements. With wonderful applications out their like ADW Launcher, Launcher Pro, Home ++ or GDE, there's no shortage of replacements that give you various options that you just don't get from your stock launcher. It helps us individualize and customize our phones just a little more, based on our preferences, not a carrier's or a manufacture's. I think we can ...

Is No LED On The Galaxy S Keeping You From Buying One? Try This.

by Stormy Beach on 23rd Jul 2010 -

Thanks to all of the ongoing work and brilliance of the xda-developer community, your fears of not having a flashing LED notification light for your new Samsung device can now be dismissed. A very creative developer by the name of madmack, has solved the so- called problem. As we are all aware, the AMOLED screens use no power where black is displayed. What madmack did was simply make a notification pop up that turns your screen black and displays a simple, low powered, red square light at the the top left of your screen. The square moves around to various locations, ...

Access your Windows Desktop Securely Using OpenSSH and TightVNC

by Michael Banks on 3rd May 2010 -

In this howto I will cover how to use OpenSSH (running in Cygwin) and TightVNC to access your Windows desktop from your phone. Please note that while the use of OpenSSH is optional, it is highly recommended since it allows you to encrypt all communication between your VNC server and client. Before we begin download Cygwin (Homepage | Direct Link) and TightVNC (Homepage | Direct Link). If you are on Windows 7, follow the links to the TightVNC 2 Beta version on the download page instead of downloading the stable build. For all intents and purposes you can think of Cygwin as ...
