Braven BRV-1

Bluetooth speakers, there are so many of them but very few that can actually be classified as a true portable sound system. I have been looking for a great Bluetooth speaker that will last me throughout the day and be able to keep up with me. Enter Braven and their amazing BRV-1, this is my number one speaker as of now. Not only is it a portable powerful Bluetooth speaker it can also charge your mobile device. But enough talk let me show you why you should get the Braven BRV-1 for yourself.

First Impression:

First getting BRV-1 out the box I’m happy to say it has a premium feel to it. The rubber housing around the BRV-1 gives it that “handle everything” look. I was eager to try out this Bluetooth speaker and see just how well it could hold up in my day-to-day use. The fact that it also looked great paired with my Note II/UAG Case put it over the top in my personal cool factor test as well.

Braven BRV-1 Box Contents

In The Box:

  • Braven BRV-1
  • AUX Cable
  • Micro-USB Charging Cable
  • 1 Lanyard
  • 1 Lanyard w/3M To Hold Cap

Braven BRV-1 Water Resistant

Water Resistant:

This is the best feature about the BRV-1 in my opinion. The fact that I can use it anywhere out in the wild and not have to worry about moisture affecting its performance is great. It can handle rain and the common splash here and there. So using it pool-side is not a problem with the BRV-1. Water resistance on the BRV-1 is great but it is only 100% resistant if you have the cap on the back on the back completely sealed. This cap creates a water proof seal for the vital connections (Micro USB charging port, AUX, and the USB power port) on the back of the speaker so make sure it is tight to guarantee that water-resistant seal.  Now bear in mind I said it’s water RESISTANT, so please DO NOT submerge the BRV-1 it isn’t capable of complete submersion and if you do try you will lose your speaker.

Braven BRV-1 Portable Charging

Portable Charger:

Not only is this a great speaker it is also a great portable charger. Unfortunately it only has a battery size of 1400 mAh so using it with my Note II doesn’t really do anything for me. The fact that it also only puts out about 1A also stops me from using it as the Note II requires 2A to charge at a normal rate. So this is only for mobile devices and won’t charge your tablets either. Then again I wouldn’t really use it as a portable charger at all, but it is nice to know you have that option. As the saying goes, better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Braven BRV-1 Shock Resistant

Shock Resistant:

Simply put, this thing can take a hit. I have taken it out on some hikes, took it to a bonfire, and just had it out on the basketball courts, it worked great. Albeit sand is a lot harder to clean than water (used the air pump at the gas station to clean it out) but this thing powered through it all. I have dropped it a total of 3 times on purpose and it came off without a scratch. Overall I am impressed with happy with how it well it performed in the elements.

 Braven BRV-1 Sound Quality

Sound Quality:

Now personally this speaker is amazing when it comes to sound, especially for its small form factor. The Braven BRV-1 has a dual speakers in the front under the aluminum grill and a subwoofer on the bottom. To fully test out the sound I used two songs, one for treble and the other for bass.

For the treble test I used Bittersweet by the Verve as it has a nice classical melody along with some great vocals. The song sounded great and came in clear at both low/high volumes. It had the power to make the violins sound like they were right next to me and it sounded great doing it.

For the bass test I used Macklemore’s Can’t Hold Us, in the bass category I liked the lows it produce but when set to max volume it did over power the song a bit. However I can say it does not lack power at all, in fact the bass was so strong that the speaker actually vibrated off the edge of my desk during this test (video below).

Braven BRV-1 Wireless calling

Now while this is advertised as a portable Bluetooth speaker it does have more features than other products in this category. The BRV-1 can also act as a Bluetooth speaker phone and you can rest assured knowing your caller will hear you because the BRV-1 also has a built-in noise cancelling mic. This is great because this feature is sometimes sold as a whole other product on its own, but with Braven you get this on top of everything else. All of my callers agreed that my voice came in loud and clear, as did theirs while I was driving. I also took a phone call at the beach, low volume of course, and despite the wind they were able to hear me better with the BRV-1 than then my Note II. That’s saying something.

  • Sound Quality:4.8/5
  • Call Quality: 5/5
  • Durability:5/5
  • Charging Capacity:4/5

After using this speaker for the last 3 weeks I can honestly say this is the best portable speaker I have ever owned. With all the amazing features you get and not to mention the great design quality of the case I think $180 is more than a reasonable price for this portable speaker.  The battery life for the speaker portion of the BRV-1 was more than enough to give me 2 days of use. The only thing that was a bit lacking for me was the capacity of the battery in regards to the portable charger side of things.. Being the owner of a Note II I can tell you that there are very few portable chargers that can put out the 2 Amps it requires to charge at a decent rate. With that said it still should not deter you from buying it, Note II or not the Braven BRV-1 is the speaker to own. So hit up the links below and get yourself the BRV-1. This has been an AndroidSPIN review thanks for reading.

Have you ever used the Beats Pill? Bout the same $180. Considering buying the Beats because of its Amazing Sound quality and volume. It can even fit in a jeans pocket.

Lemme know how this brv stacks up against the beats Pill please..

In my opinion the BRV-1 wins hands down over the pill. You get way more bang for your buck. The pill is only a bluetooth speaker,it did has the nfc but that is about as exciting as it gets. The BRV-1 had that plus the water/shock resistance, it can charge your smartphone, and puts out great sound. But this is my opinion so if the beats pill works for ya all power to you, personally I’ll stick with the BRV-1
