While I’m taking an unplanned break from app reviews (due to my G1 borking out completely), I thought it would be interesting to try something a bit different. To this extent, I caught up with developer htcclay, maker of such ROMs as FastTest, StupidFast, and now SuperBad, and asked him some questions.

  • Can you introduce yourself briefly?

Sure…My name is Clay Smith…or possibly known better as htcclay. 🙂

  • Do you have a day-job besides Android development?

I do… I’m a recycle driver for the biggest garbage company in the world. It’s an awesome job! I’m a garbage man! lol

  • How did you get into development?

Well…honestly, I started off with Windows Mobile…(I know) lol… I had a few WM phones…so I was into phones in general. I started looking into android after I bought my son a black G1 for Christmas a couple of years back. I didn’t root it right away. I considered rooting it after I had done almost everything to my HTC Tilt I could. I got android to boot on my tilt and played with it only for about twenty minuets before grabbing my son’s phone and searching out root for android…Telnetd! =)    I sold my tilt about a week later and purchased a bronze G1.!

  • What was your first android phone?

My first android phone was a bronze G1. I bought the HUGE 2600mAh battery and the stupid big battery cover. lol

  • And what is your current phone?

I have a white MyTouch 3G 32b I use daily.

  • What ROM’s are you most well known for?

I suppose FastTest , StupidFast and now SuperBad for the MyTouch/G1 32b.

  • What would you say is your best piece of work with Android so far?

I’m most pleased with the last “StupidFast 1.3.3”.

  • Is there any stuff we should be looking forward to?

lol…I’m not really sure. I never plan anything. I really just do this for fun, then share.

  • From those listed below, which is your favorite anticipated feature of Froyo?
    • Flash 10.1
    • Auto-updates for apps
    • FM Radio on some phones
    • Multi-coloured notifications on some phones
    • Official Apps on SD Card

All would be very nice…Flash 10.1 is kind of cool though…Looking forward to it.

  • What are your favourite apps?

To name a few I use daily…astro, twidroid pro, bookmarks br, bible (you version) let me look…Su file manager and quickboot.

  • Which other developers you follow and respect?

Most all of them. They know who they are…I won’t be specific…in fear of leaving someone out. J

  • Which Android phone do you want to own the most?

Good question…Well…I went and looked at the HD2 at T-Mobile last week and loved it…(the phone anyway, not the OS. Sorry WM) The handset was amazing. So I guess the HD2 running a clean 2.1 eclair would be my “dream phone.

  • What do you think of the recently announced T-Mobile MyTouch 3G Slide in terms of hardware and software?

Haven’t really looked into the hardware…I like the sense UI espresso that is in it though…It’s unlike any sense I’ve seen…with all the different themes and options. If advertised and priced correctly I believe it will do very well.

  • What is your general opinion of the XDA-Developers Community?

General opinion of xda is good. There is a lot of neat stuff to be found there. My only complaints are the lack of searching from the average new user. Oh yeah…and posting problems without a logcat lol! I was new once and I’m still learning. In totality it’s awesome.

  • Has AndroidSpin.com (and Simon Walker) been good to you since you started hosting your stuff on there?

AndroidSpin has been really, really cool…especially Simon…He’s the man. He’s 98% of the reason my stuff gets released. Also, by the way…AndroidSpin gave me hosting free for months with asking for nothing in return before my first post…They have been nothing but cool.

  • Do you have a Twitter account you want to plug?

Yes…but I feel weird plugging it. Follow Jesus Christ instead, not me. =)]

  • Do you think of yourself as one of the newer developers around when compared with people like Cyanogen?

Hmm…I don’t really see myself as a developer…I’ve always felt the guys that actually write this stuff are. Not put it together. Idk. Maybe the team that actually wrote rosie from scratch or made the mms/sms we compile were developers.

  • So would you prefer to be called a ‘dev’ or a ‘hacker’?

Clay 😉

  • To finish off, if you could make any single change to the Android platform, what would you change? You can either add a feature or remove a feature.

Tough question…I’ll have to think on that one and get back to ya.

Finally, I challenge everyone that doesn’t know their Creator to search Him out. I challenge everyone that doesn’t know Jesus Christ as their Lord and their Savior to earnestly seek Him. Draw near to him and he’ll draw near to you. It’s real.

Seacrest out…

Anyone is free to say what they like and we take away from it what we want to take away from it. I ignore the religious stuff. Nothing to do with Android and delusional anyway, IMHO. I can’t imagine basing my life around something for which there is no proof at all. Unhooking your views from reality makes you vulnerable to any scammer with a good story you WANT to believe. Sure, it works for the GOP, but it leaves people operating on baseless assumptions…and that leads to error. Ask any programmer, organiser or jet pilot. A life based on false assumptions can kill. Crusade / Jihad anyone? No thanks.

Clay makes great ROMs though. Luv’em.

Sorry, but you have no foundation on your belief, so it is absurd that you dismiss mine so publicly.

Could have done without the religion plug, but hey, it’s your interview 😀

I’ve heard good things about StupidFast 1.3.3, I’ll probably flash it after SuperBad. My thanks to htcclay and all the devs (or whatever you guys like to be called) for all your work, it’s much appreciated!

I really like this interview idea, I’d definitely like more 😀

you guys need to stfu, with the whole comments on the religion, Jesus thing, you sound like perfectly crafted uninformed sheep that like their gadgets. God Bless You HtcClay. Ive noticed a lot of people in my life and online all of a sudden attacking Christianity or Jesus lately… Damn Illuminati and their subliminal messages programing people.

No one (aside from you) is attacking anything or anyone. This is an android/tech site, so I think some people were a bit thrown off with the religious vibe. I’m all for people believing what they want, but there’s a place for it.

People used to be tolerant of Xtians until Xtians starting imposing creationism, THEIR morality and a lot of other stuff on people who don’t share it and want none of it. If Xtians want to be left alone, they should go back to leaving other people alone…and *especially* stop trying to teach religious mumbo-jumbo like creationism or Intelligent Design as science. That alone is why I react. Evolution happens around us every day – bacteria evolving by natural selection in response to anti-biotics and plants evolving by natural selection due to Round-up and other chemicals. If Christians wonder why they are getting a negative reaction, they need look no further than these matters. Leave others alone who prefer to let evidence be their guide as to what is true or real.

ok heres the thing…have you ever done research on the topic of evolution? Did you know that scientists are trying to move away from the theory in general because of all the flaws in it? Probably not… Did you know that even if the evolutionary “THEORY” was a true, the earth has not been around long enough, by several billion years, for evolution to have even occurred in single cells.

Ok so heres the probability of life coming from 1 cell: the odds are the same as winning 235 slot machines in a row doing them consecutively, only winning when it lands on 3 7’s. I kid you not this is the actual chance of life being created thru evolution

anymore questions, message me or something bc i will blow your world…

I don’t think people are really attacking religion R3N0, I think some people just don’t see the need for it’s mention in an interview about tech. Not everyone is Christian, and everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion. Like APJG said though, it’s Clay’s interview :).

I love his work and it’s about 98% what I flash on my mt3g. SuperFast!

Clay likes to throw a Jesus thing out every once and a while when he gets a lot of followers. But he doesnt bring it up much, or really push it on people. Whats great is his work, and that he never wants donations…he actually refuses them. Im just confused because he only released one “StupidFast” and the 1.3.3 ROM is “SuperFast” either way, if you havent used SuperFast 1.3.3 CHECK IT OUT its really amazing. It makes you wonder where SuperBad will be once Cyan and Clay get everything worked out

I know people that are into JC like Clay is and they try to cram it down your throat all day. Clay doesnt, not everyday at least. If you dont like hearing it, dont use his work or follow him. I personally dont believe in JC, but i respect that he does, and think his work is of the best i the android universe. Does it have a place on this site? Probably not, but does it diminish the work? Was it all he spoke about? No, he just threw it out at the end….i’ve communicated with him on twitter many times, and he never tried to talk about JC to me.

Great interview. I really like all of the interviews these Android sites have been doing with the devs lately.

Superbad looks awesome. I am planning on trying it as soon as Cyanogen gets his eclair for the G1 to a point where he is happy with it. Right now I’m running his eclair test 2. I want to keep testing Cyan’s rom until it is more stable, then try HTCClay’s and Dr. Cloverdale’s versions.

Clay was the first dev to lure me away from a CM rom with Super D and I’m a fan of his theming style. He’s great at integrating a lot of cool mods into one solid rom without too much filler.

Thankfully, the human species seems to be growing out of religion, however slowly. It’s better to try to be respectful of religious choices and demonstrate a positive atheist lifestyle through morality and logic than to be confrontational. Attacking any religions, however absurd, only reinforces spiritual defensiveness and encourages evangelicalism.

AWESOME rom Clay, also to all the devs who has involved themselves into making all things happen onto the g1/mt3g! Just wanted to show some appreciation on all your works!

Also, two thumbs up on your encouragement and inspiration on letting people know about your religion, because religion and culture is a part of each individual. I respect you and everyone should, you’ve set a great example for many christians and believers in Christ! God bless to you and all the ridicules who has no respect. Keep up the great works!

Clay- thanks for all your work. Your ROMs are among the fastest around, and I appreciate the fact that you take the opportunity to share your faith from this platform. True faith is not something that can be checked at the door, then picked up again later when it is more convenient…I think that your openness about it in this community is a testament to your walk with Christ. For those that did not appreciate it, I would just like to point out the fact that it was not forceful, but rather a challenge. If you felt challenged by what he said, then go do some real searching rather than complaining about it. You can start with Lee Strobel’s books- he was an athiest and well-respected author for the Chicago Tribune before converting to Christianity. I think that you will see that he is far from delusional, and will give you something to think about at the very least.

Anyway… Great work Clay, and great interview.

YES, this guy was a hardcore atheist, then actually did research and interviewed, scrutinized, and sought to disprove major Christian figures. The books are the “case for the creator”, “case for Christ”, and “case for faith” by Lee Strobel

If his gentle challenge stirred something up in you, i agree with Geoffott, go do some research and find out more. Christianity is not a threat, but an invitation.

Christianity is not an “invitation”, but a fairytale. And not even an original one at that.

Strobel is naive and full of crap, but you can’t blame him for taking advantage of a business opportunity.
