It has been going around today that Google was pushing out the last release of Froyo to Nexus One owners. Well, that rumor has come true. Today on Google’s blog they announced it.

New Android 2.2 Software Update for Nexus One phones

Starting today, Nexus One users will begin to receive the Android 2.2 (codenamed Froyo) over-the-air software update on their phones. This update provides some great new features including support for making your handset a portable hotspot and support for Adobe Flash within the browser. For a complete list of everything we’ve included in Android 2.2, please see the Android 2.2 Platform Highlights.

In order to access the update, you will receive a message on your phone’s notification bar. Just download the update, wait for it to install, and you should be all set. This update will be rolled out gradually to phones – and most users will receive the notification by the end of the week . We hope you enjoy these new features.

If you would like to manually update your phone to the latest and greatest the full ROM update package for FRF85B, is available at:

http://android.clients.google.com/packages/passion/signed-passion-ota-42745.dc39ca1f.zip

*** WARNING ***
Please remember that AndroidSPIN is not liable for anything that happens to your phone using this guide.

This guide will help you manually flash an update image to your Google Nexus One.

  1. First thing you have to do is rename your update file to update.zip.
  2. Copy the update.zip file onto your microSD card.
  3. With your Nexus One powered off, hold down the trackball and press the power button.
  4. You’ll be booted into a white screen with three Android robots on skateboards. Select “Bootloader
  5. On the next screen, select “Recovery
  6. Your phone will reboot, giving you a picture of the Android robot and an exclamation point inside a triangle.
  7. Now press the power button and volume up button at the same time. It could take a couple of tries.
  8. Now (using the trackball this time) choose “Apply sdcard:update.zip” and let things run their course.

This update is working for any Nexus One with a stock recovery image. Do not try and put this on your rooted phone as this could brick your Nexus One.

i downloaded the frf85b update 81.9mb. renamed it to update.zip and put it on my sd card just like i did for the frf50 update. when i booted up the recovery thing it did a check for the sd card and said that it couldnt find it but let me continue. when i got to the stage of applying sd card: update.zip it wouldnt work as it said the directory doesnt exist.
anyone having similar problems or no how to solve it?
    im running stock frf50 atm.

I did apply the manual update, everything went super smooth, however after the final reboot, I checked the Build number it still is FRF85B. Is that what everybody got or there is something wrong ?

Manual update doesn’t work for me (Build: EPF30, Vodafone DE). I will wait for the official OTA update because I don’t want to unlock and root my N1.

Tried to update from stock EPF30 but just get “Signature verification failed”, any chance to update the european N1 version manually? Afaik I need to unlock and root before I could flash the US recovery ROM. But as mentioned above the manual update will not work with rootet devices. I’m confused and dont’t like the idea to brick my brandnew N1.

Sooo, I updated from ERE27 to FRF85B and it went smoothly – except now the Market only shows “Top free” and “Just in” buttons. (missing the “Top paid” button). I can still search for (and see) paid apps, but what happened to the button?

I’m running FRF72. Can I upgrade to the final by just using Google’s latest published zip, i.e., renaming it to update.zip and running it?

I rolled back to ERD79 + Stock Recovery on the AT&T / Rogers N1. FRF85B went on without a hitch.

wirbly … I have all three buttons. You might want to go into applications and Force Stop and Clear Cache on the Market app.

No dice on force quitting and clearing cache on the market. (I even cleared cache and rebooted) I’m on T-Mobile US if that matters.

    Wirlby,

I had the same problem with my N1 when I bought it from Google at the start of the year. I didn’t have my SIM card in (I was just using WIFI). Fitted SIM card, ‘Top Paid’ appeared.

    Hope this helps.

Another user on the Nexus help forum having the same problem just discovered that the market works when signed into his alternate gmail account, but not his primary. I just tried it, and sure enough, the market is back to normal when I sign into my alternate account fresh after a factory reset. Then I reset again and signed into my primary account, and sure enough it was broken again.

Something about my primary account is angering Froyo.

I figured out that my settings are being restored when I sign into my primary account, even though I’ve un-checked the “backup my settings” option several times, which is supposed to delete then from the google cloud. Not only is it not deleting them, but I believe they might be corrupt. When I sign into my primary account, my screen goes to full brightness (which I never set). This doesn’t happen with the alternate account.

I desperately need a way to delete my stuck settings backup from the google cloud.

To all those who are having issues installing on ERE27, you must make sure the file is directly on your SD Card and not in a sub folder such as sdcard/download. Hope this helps!

behzad, the smaller file is for incremental updates from other frf* releases. If you’re not sure what this means, just use the larger file, since it’s the full update and will update from any previous version.

I am still waiting on the OTA update, I’d like to do it manually but the link seems to be down now. I am currently on build ERE27, is anyone else still waiting on the OTA? My carrier is T-Mobile.
