Android Market on the Verge of Hitting 100K

This really is amazing news, and a testament to just how popular Android has become. In September 2009, the Android Market had only 10,000 apps. Now, just 10 months later the Market has over 90,000 apps and is on track to surpass 100,000 before the month is over. If Android Market continues to grow at its current pace, we could very well see it catching up to the iTunes market within a year.

Also interesting to note is just how many new apps are being added every month, and it’s another staggering number. Every day, I scour the market looking for new and interesting or useful apps to share with you in the weekly round-up. With tens of thousands of apps being added, I’m only sharing a tiny fraction. Hopefully, when Android updates their online market we’ll be able to search out the newest apps much more easily.

Way to go, Team Android!

And 50,000 are apps for porn. I am in android user, not an iphone lover, but please give that stuff its own section or options to block it. I go looking for just-in games, and 90 percent of the just in games is new soft-porn.

Good point. However, how many downloads on the iPhone store are soft core porn? That is, hot sexy babes…blah. They are some of the best sellers if I remember correctly. The whole idea of 100k apps versus 300k is so stupid. How the hell can anyone use even close to 30? Like this stuff for the iPhone

I love Android and I am a huge Android supporter. But I must agree with dude. Most of the so called apps are not really even apps. When I first got my G1 I was constantly checking the Market to what new apps were out. It was so exciting but now I dread checking the Market for new apps because there is always so many non apps posing as apps. It is so unbelievable that they would allow such! I guess when your trying to make your numbers look good in comparison to i phone apps Google will allow anyone to submit anything just to say they have one more app in the Market. In my opinion the extremely large amount of apps that aren’t even apps is truly embarrassing to the android o/s. Android dose not need to have more apps than i phone to be successful. Just actual working apps.

Yes, the apps coming on the market these days are a sham. They are all the same app published thousands of times by the same developer! “Pictures of pretty girls” with 1,000 different names, all loaded with advertisements and God knows what else.

These are not apps… these are SPAM. There is a good reason to limit the number of apps that each developer can publish and there is also a good reason why Google won’t do that, and we all know what that is. What good is 100,000 apps when 99,900 of them are pure spam garbage?

The spam is a big network externality for actual developers. Basically google is counting on market forces to give the spam bad reviews. But that implies at least a few customers try it out, give it bad ratings. But its pure existance makes the just in feature practically useless.

As much as I love my HTC Desire (best phone I have any had for free on my £20 contract with 3 starting a few months back), I agree with Dude and Brain S. Why on earth are there so much porn and spammed apps on the Android market. I now tend to use the internet forums and You Tube to find any nifty gadgets because I too cannot stand seeing so much porn related apps etc. We are not all porn freaks. I certainly do not want to be browsing while at work or anywhere else and someone seeing the page I have landed on just happens to be porn related. I quite agree this should be given a different section.
