
HTC has had a real problem meeting the demands of the consumers with the heavy hitting devices like the HTC Droid Incredible and the HTC Evo 4G. In June, we heard that the Taiwanese manufacturer was going to switch the display on the Google Nexus One, the HTC Desire and the HTC Droid Incredible and while nothing was officially announced, that news left some of us hanging.
“HTC is experiencing high-demand for many of our phones, specifically our phones with 3.7 inch displays. The new SLCD display technology enables us to ramp up our production capabilities quickly to meet the high-demand,” said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation. “The SLCD displays provide consumers with a comparable visual experience to HTC’s current 3.7 inch displays with some additional benefits including battery performance.”
We have already noticed a display switch for the HTC Evo 4G to the Epson display and while they had switched the display they have also switched to poor quality. HTC has announced officially, that they have moved to Super LCD displays and that,”Super LCD displays use five times less battery than normal LCD.” One of their largest selling points for devices before was the AMOLED display and how AMOLED saved battery power. They also state that they are “committed” to both display technologies and that they will be using them both on future devices and we will see just how comparable these displays really are.
“HTC believes that both technologies offer exceptional user experiences, and we will employ both types of displays concurrently within our current product lineup.”
HTC is looking at expanding their production facilities and are rumored to be working on their own display for future devices that would eliminate any future shortages.

I’m not a screen genius or anything, but aren’t LEDs better than LCDs? I like how HTC is trying to keep up with demands, but I don’t want to see the screens start to lack in quality.

I could see this being on par with AMOLED, but different… I think that you get a better color saturation with AMOLED, but SLCD would arguable have a higher pixel density than the AMOLED displays for the same sized screen. The battery life may be a factor more about what content is being shown more than anything. A white screen might suck up more power on an AMOLED screen than any content on the SLCD, whereas a black screen will have nearly 0 power use on AMOLED.
Just as Apple’s iPhone 4G screen is a higher pixel density, I don’t know that it is “better,” or that my Nexus One’s power friendly AMOLED is “better.”
