Just as we receive news of the demise of our good old faithful T-Mobile G1, I also have news of some testing I’ve been doing while I had the Samsung Vibrant here. The tests are all run on the T-Mobile network in the suburbs of Chicago at ZIP code of 60073. The results are amazing and very confusing…
These are the averages of 3 speed tests run using Speedtest.net from the Android Market:
|
How come a 2 year old device that is about to be made obsolete is getting consistently faster data rates on the T-Mobile network than the 2 latest super phones I ran the tests against?
They are all connected at 3G speeds, according to the displays. So it the radio technology in the phones? Is it because the Nexus One and the Vibrant can connect at higher speeds once the network is available that they are tweaked for the higher speeds and are slower until that time? I’m no hardware engineer, but I’d love to hear the thoughts of anyone who has any insight!
If you have multiple devices or your friends are close by and you have a chance to run the same test, do it and post your results in the comments. I’d love to see how other devices compare to these results. For a true comparison, try to run the test from the same location or at least the same ZIP code.
If you want to try Speedtest.net for yourself, head over to the Android Market or click or scan the QRCode below.

My vibrant gets consistently speeds around 3mbs while my mytouch 3g gets around 1mbs in dallas tx, but we are hspa+ here.
Yeah, that would be nice but we don’t have it yet in Chicago.
Try the test with both phones set to 3G and see what you get!
The availability of hspa+ should not be a factor since no device currently out supports it.
yes but tmobile has said that certain 3g phones on their network (g1, mt3g, vibrant included) will get a speed boost from the stronger network that is hspa+.

GO G1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GO G1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Those speeds suck, sounds like a bad network
I get 5mbps with acer liquid and around 4 with my dream
To all thos posting up big numbers. Can we see screen shots. It’s hard to believe that on T-Mobiles network there’s quality in speeds this high. 4-5+ mbps sounds more like wi-fi than 3G network.
Radiofrequency plays a small parts in reception and roll over to strength which in turn gives you speeds quality. Not callin anyone out but I’m just saying.
I’ve gotten 4.5mbps once in Seattle. But usually I’m in the 2-3mbps range. Cant post a screenshot now, as I’m on travel in Baltimore area (and currently on edge)

I’m in Detroit, and typically, I get speeds in the 0.6Mbps range, but on two towers in the city that I’ve come across I routinely get 3Mbps on my G1 and 4Mbps on my TP2.

4267 or 4.2 mbs on 3g in dallas g1. Don’t have any phones to compare to but that’s the highest out of like 5 tests it ranged from 600kbs to the 4267 :/

You have to be careful with “Speedtest”. Many ISPs appear to tune their networks so speedtest makes them look like screaming speed rockets…..while you can barely play a YouTube video at less than 1/5th the speed you’re supposed to have. Phones aside, Speedtest on my DSL connection at home shows 7MB down and 1MB up….but NO WAY do I see through put like that in actual use. I’d be happy if i saw 20% opf that. Sppedtest is a very unreliable way to measure anything. The cheats have been locked in by every part of the network with an interest in appearing to be fast without actually being fast.
I’ve been thinking of a way to encode my network traffic to LOOK like Speedtest data packets. Now that would be seriously cool…..until everyone did it.

Maybe the last radio update for the g1 really improved everything? i forget the exact number for the radio update but it greatly improved my 3g speeds when i flashed it. im sure the vibrant will get a better radio and improve…but that one radio update for the g1 and mt3g was designed especially for 3g boosts…and the n1 has always had 3g issues from what ive read

Hey i’m in jacksonville florida and they said they turned on hspa+ but haven’t seen it yet but at tmobile store test on standard 3g went as follows.
My G1 cm5: .78 mbps
mt3g stock: 1.69 mbps
mt slide stock: 1.23 mbps
Vibrant: 1.54 mbps
tested each phone five times. And showed the guy working that my G1 was slower and he tested one from the back and it was about the same as mine. So i either need hspa+ or a new phone.
I just ordered the Samsung Vibrant myself. An “advanced” tech support rep told me that Jacksonville does have hsp active now w/average speed of 21 mbps & I asked if it was peak that she meant & she reiterated average. She xfd me to another rep to try to offer me a better price for the phone. I asked that rep the same about the speed & she reiterated the same as the other rep per the information they’re given as reps apparently. I don’t think those speeds are accessible totally to you & in me in Jax as yet but I would be extremely surprised if it is true when I first use the phone but I think your result is probably more indicative of what we can expect in Jax until maybe they’re finished using us as a test market for HSPDA as they emphasized that are area is at the moment

Would it be unfair to compare a G1 running CM5 or CM6 (Android 2.1 and 2.2 respectively)? It could be that the newer OSes add extra features and options to the network stack that slow things down.
Still I didn’t expect such a difference between devices.

I was seeing the same as yours – my G1 had higher speed than the Vibrant. What I did see is that the G1 goes to S.F, CA were I am and the New Vibrant goes to Seattle, WA and shows SF, Ca as thousands of miles away UNTIL I did the GPS fix and now it is set at SF and both phones are now very close in download speed (the G1 is still a little faster still…)

I am in New Orleans. I have the MT3GS its getting 4.75mbps
I also have a rooted HD2 with android on it, n its even getting 4.75, sometimes jumps to 5.5mbps.
HSPA is fast!!!
cant wait for the HSPA+ G1 Blaze!!

Thats funny because a week ago i was trying to show up my bro who has the new iphone 4 and we both have speedtest apps…i found through several runs that my g1 was consistantly faster in download and upload speeds..keep in mind we are on diff networks..but both 3g w/ and both with full signal…the g1 generaly was getting around 800kb download and 500kbps upload…while the iphone 4 was averaging around 700kbps download and 300kbps upload…yay G1 wins again…brings me back to about 2 years ago when he had the iphone 3 and i was like send me a video of that thing and he was like..uh..i cant….iphone #fail

I have found speedspeedtest results to be very inconsistent. When I heard they have hdspa here I have been testing regularly. Most of the time I get 550k up and down, but sometimes it will shoot up to over 2m, such is faster than my broadband. G1 btw

I’m getting 2.5 – 3.5mbps in Columbus Ohio on my Vibrant depending on where I am at the time.

Having used the G1 in over 37 states, fords varied from 300 kbps to 5mbps when HSPA + was available. Vibrant hasn’t traveled as much, though it cruises consistently at 4.2 mbps. The coherence lies on the running services, just stop DRM service and you shall notice am increased in speed. When you download a huge so 70mb or so, the Vibrant smokes the G1 with froyo. Remember, the Vibrant has a one ghz processr running at 800 mhz.

if its a rooted/rom’d phone, maybe try looking at the build.prop file and seeing if you can tweak the 3g and gprs settings?

Its because an antenna can’t function properly in the designs of the N1 and Vibrant. The My Touch Slide, and the G1 get much faster speeds then any paper thin phone.
