I have got to hand it to the guys over at xda-developers. As soon as something new drops, someone somewhere is rooting it for us. Where would we be with out these guys?
XDA -Dev Senior member netarchy has already gained root on the 2.2 Froyo update that just came out yesterday. Here is all the relevant information from netarchy.
“Have at it folks.
You might be able to just flash this over the leaked ota, but I advise doing a full wipe before flashing just to be safe.
MD5 Sums:

And the updated radios:

Flash these radios one at a time in recovery, you will have to reboot once for each one.“
As always, the disclaimer: We nor the dev will assume any responsibility for any device problems or failure. Just saying. Enjoy, Everyone…and enjoy your Froyo!

Is this for 2.1 phones that have been already rooted, OR, is it for those of us that got the ota 2.2 and now want root?

I got an EVO 2 weeks ago and am on 2.2. Would like to root my device but am a newbie at this. Not sure how to do a full wipe nor flash the zip file in my device, as recommended:

Does anyone have a link to a page that explains how to do the full wipe and flash?

Anyone care to answer my above question?
apologize for the late response. This method was created to gain root on the OTA that was pushed out by Sprint to move the device to 2.2. so to clarify. According to what I found, if you never rooted and are stock and recieved your 2.2 OTA update and now wish to root your phone you can. I hope that helps.
and to add a little more clarification this only works on the official OTA not the leaked OTA.

Wait!! I have a HTC Evo that came with 2.1…… then I downloaded via OTA sprint’s froyo 2.2 update ….. and now I indeed want a rooted phone…. please answer my bright eyed deer looking self: I too can now root with the info posted right above here?? Are you serious ??????
from everything I have read you should have no issues rooting the 2.2 official update. I don’t have an EVo so I cannot confirm how easy it maybe. but if you follow the instruction and read through the forum from the source you should have no problem rooting it.
