Universal 1-Click Root App for Android Devices

119

1-Click root has never been easier or more widely available (on about a dozen Android devices so far) until NOW!

A newly released app, Universal Androot, lets you root and unroot your phone with the click of a button. One good thing about this app is that you can still get OTA software updates after rooting your device. This is because apparently, the rooting method doesn’t affect the bootloader. The other cool thing about this app is that it supports a wide range of Android devices…and that list appears to be growing!

According to the developer, the app uses the same exploit that was used to root Droid X.  It’s been known to work well so far.

Devices currently supported:

  • Google Nexus One (2.2)
  • HTC Hero (2.1)
  • HTC Magic (1.5)
  • Dell Streak (2.1)
  • Motorola Milestone (2.1)
  • Motorola XT701
  • Motorola XT800 (2.1)
  • Motorola ME511
  • Sony Ericsson X10 (1.6)
  • Sony Ericsson X10 Mini Pro (1.6)
  • Acer Liquid (2.1)
  • Vibo A688 (1.6)

Devices not yet supported:

  • Samsung i9000 (Galaxy S)
  • Samsung i6500U
  • HuaWei U8220
  • HTC Desire / Legend / Wildfire

It might not be too long before we see support for more devices.

This app is not on the Android Market but you can grab the latest version of Universal Androot from the XDA-Developrs website. The developer’s blog appeared to be down at press time.  Any updates on the developer’s page can be posted in the comments section of this post.

If you have not rooted your device then now is the time. Let us know how well the app worked for you.

Droid X here. It worked flawlessly. That was entirely too easy. But sure enough. I have a superuser button now, and I installed barnacle tether and tested to to be sure. Worked like a charm.

How about the Droid 1? I see the Milestone listed but not the Droid? Anyone know if it works for Droid 1 running 2.2 FRG01B?

Rooted doesn’t mean it unlocked NAND so no custom ROM flashing. That’s like best part of root! =/

It worked on the Godfather i.e. the G1. I have rooted the G1 several times but this process was amazingly easy. It was running 1.6 and I did not have to worry about downgrading either.

To make sure it worked all the way, I went ahead and installed ROM Manager and flashed the Clockwork Recovery over the stock recovery. I reboot to recovery and there!!! I was in recovery.

I was successfully able perform an nandroid backup as well.

Only thing remaining is for me to flash a custom ROM over it – but first I need to make sure I have the right radio before I proceed. Some caution required there.

    • Andy says:

I have a G1 and am only just considering installing a custom ROM, etc. Would like to know now that I have root access (with this app) how I go about modding my phone?

Hey Andy, I’m in the same situation myself, I’ve downloaded the radio and spl files provided at the unlockr, and the generic rom. I’m afraid to try and flash it and everything because I can’t afford to brick my phone. If anyone here knows how to flash custom roms after rooting the G1 with Universal Androot app, please inform us.
