[Updated 8/12/11] Free Fonts for Your Samsung Galaxy S Devices

27

In my never ending search for fun and useful things to bring to you guys, I have yet again stumbled across something new to share. Over at XDA, I found a thread by jzero88 which is a master list of APK files that, as far as I am aware, were created by users and submitted on XDA. They do not require root access to install, so all you stock users can have some goodies too. I can confirm the files work on the Samsung Vibrant version of the Galaxy S. It should also work on all variants in the U.S. and International.

The poster noted that he used ritalin‘s instructions on creating your own flip fonts. You can view those instructions HERE if you wish to learn how to make them. It doesn’t seem too horribly difficult.  If you are more interested in just getting your hands on some more fonts to give your Galaxy S a little bit more of a unique flair, please head on over to XDA-Developers and get your fonting on!

P.S. You will need an XDA account to download the files, but sign-up is free. Installing the APK is a breeze. Copy the file to your phone, open the APK file, install using the package installer and install the file. Once done go to MENU > SETTINGS > SOUND AND DISPLAY > FONT STYLE. You should see the font you just installed. Select it then restart the phone for it to take effect.

Here are a few samples and coincidentally the ones I am using right now.

Tim Burton

Army Of Darkness

Buffy

I will be working on bringing a lot of these over to the AndroidSPIN forums section in the next few days. The Master List is pretty big so it will take some time but keep an eye out for it.

Update: Apparently the original source link is no longer available. I have found another source with 350+ fonts available via XDA. Check that thread out HERE. I know there is another collection of easy to install apk’s as well, but can’t seem to find it at the moment. I will update that when I locate them.

Time for an update. I am the proud father of three, 2, 8, and 11. I finally just moved up from the Samsung Vibrant to the Samsung Galaxy S III...... Let me tell you, it is mind blowing. I love Android, I love tech and I love my family. Not in that order though. I work to hard, play even harder and take care of all that are around me when I can.

This is Ritalin from over in the XDA forums. Thanks for giving me some credit, I sent this into you guys almost 2 weeks ago as a suggestion and thought you just passed it up. Glad to see it here. Feel free to host my font from the original How-To.

You might want to note that some of the Lag-Fixes are causing problems with using the fonts. All of the reports I have heard of seem to be coming out of the Captivate forums, but since we share so many mods and what not there is a chance that some Vibrant users may have issues as well.

*RyanZA’s lag fix has been confirmed to work just fine with the fonts as this is what I use and have no problems with the fonts.*

Thats the same LAGFIX I am using as well. All fonts I have Aquired thus far do work perfectly. I’m glad I could bring a little more attention and credit to you guys and everyone at XDA. You all do such great work and even though XDA has a huge following things get missed and swept under the rug with out to much general population knowledge.

    Stormy Beach,
Thanks for getting the thread out to a bigger part of the market. I am glad you like them and are able to make these more available. Hopefully this will spark the creativity in some to join us over there at XDA and we can grow our list. We will be keeping it actively so head over frequently.

I too can attest that RyanZA’s lag fix gives me no trouble with the fonts posted.

    Thanks!

JUST PLEASE REMEMBER TO REMIND THOSE NEWLY REGISTERED USERS THAT XDA IS A DEVELOPMENT SITE DEDICATED TO CODERS AND DEVELOPERS WORKING ON TECHNICAL UPGRADES, TWEAKS AND HACKS AND TO PLEASE READ, SEARCH AND READ AGAIN BEFORE ASKING THE SAME QUESTIONS THAT THE PREVIOUS 300 PEOPLE ASKED… ;-)
