I repeatedly have non-Android fans, or day to day users ask me about battery life on the Droid Incredible. I am posting this here because a) it’s still being asked and b) it still works. I have been hoping to get this to a larger audience and help a larger group of consumers. I hope that this assists people in extending their time with their phones. I’d also like to ask for people with newer phones, G2, MyTouch 4G, Desire Z, etcetera to try this and share in the comments. I don’t know if battery life is as much of an issue with the newer phones, so please sound off in the comments section.
After the launch of the Evo, many users cried out that the battery life was at best decent and at worst abysmal. Most of the chatter seems to have settled down after the release of the OTA update. Lost deep within the xda-forums Forum Link I came across a gem of information that apparently comes from someone within the support team of HTC. I say that the information is lost because I cannot find the actual topic or post to source it correctly.
Thankfully I copied down the suggestions for how to “condition” the battery. I am unsure as to whether or not that is technically what happens when we do this, but I’ll use the term. This works for both the Droid Incredible and the Evo 4G. UPDATE: Nexus One Also Works.
Step 1. Charge the phone (turned on) for 8 hours.
Step 2. Unplug the phone, turn it off, plug back in and charge for an hour.
Step 3. Unplug it, turn it on for 2 minutes. Plug it in and charge for 1 additional hour.
Your battery life should increase dramatically
I have done this on my phone. Unfortunately I did not document the before and after information. But I can verify that it makes a significant difference. The longest that I have managed to use my phone is 24 hours with moderate to heavy use. I generally would get no more than 13 hours prior to this “hack”
I did not plug the phone in once during this time. The Nexus information was verified by@the_real_Newman Thanks Man
Conditions:
Automatic Updating – On
Wifi – On 40%
4G – On 40%
GPS – On 20%
Screen – On for nearly 18 hours of that
Not task managers, no setCPU profiles, no changes to any power settings.
Twitter, Facebook, News and Weather – auto update every 4 hours
Give it a try on your device and let us know how it goes and we’ll try to compile a list of devices that this method works on.

Trying this on my Vibrant now!
Did this work? I’d love to know if it is only HTC devices that benefit from this. I assume that they are due to the fact that it came originally from the HTC support forums.
Tryin’ this on my HD2
Did this work on the HD2? Are you even able to wipe battery stats? If there was a benefit, what kind? Did it extend the battery at all? In Android or in WinMo?
Trying this on my HTC Droid Incredible
I’ll try this on my g1 tonight and recomment when I find out. My g1 on 2.2 seems to be only lasting about 10 hours. 13 if I rarely use it. But when I play a game on it for 20 minutes I lose atleast 20% battery and its all downhill from there
I have the same issue, I don’t know if my battery is dead or going to die, Today I went for outdoor activity and with 100% battery and just usign the cardio trainer app for saving my gps track and activity it went off after 3:30 hours. And yes with the screen off. SO sad
I even used th Bluetooth GPS module to save more battery.
With the same thing when I use my nokia E51 with the GPS module I get almost a day of battery life.
I don’t know if it is the battery problem or the phone itself? do you have the same issue?
honestly i think my phone and battery are just getting REALLY OLD. ive flashed over 50 times which i think doesnt help either. i tried this recommendation last night but didnt reset the battery stats. after 6 hours it said i had 15% battery life left after using my phone for about 10min vnc with phonemypc. my phone ended up hitting “[ 0 ]” 3 hours before it actually died. seems like whenever i use an app for an extended amount of time it destroys my battery.. i just want a new phone
P.S. i also didnt unplug when needed. trying again tonight to see if i get any better results tomorrow.
Which phones do you two have? Behzad and Zedklind? I do know that G1′s are getting long in the tooth. I don’t know if this would even be able to have much of an effect on the small 1150 mAh (is that size right?) battery.
I did mean to update this post, but I’m still just contributor so I am unable to add the part about wiping stats.
Do you have to do this once, or every time you want the enhanced battery life?
I have read that you only need to do it once. (But this may not be the case for those of us who flash roms on our phones a lot.)
I know that with the same rom on my phone I was able to maintain the battery life for at least a month and a half. I actually need to do this again on my phone because the battery has not been as satisfactory lately. I might test with a few different roms to see if it maintains after flashing.
You can also try this. It’s only a beta, but it hasn’t given my DInc any trouble. It has also doubled my battery life, in one fell swoop.
Best feature (among many, many) others: when the screen turns off, the app will disable wi-fi and data (and it’ll turn it on when the screen lights up again). It’s got several smart features that prevent that from becoming a problem–say, while downloading a file.

Not applicable to Motorolas. they automatically power-on when plugged in.
Yep… that’s what I just discovered
wasn’t sure if it was the Droid itself or the CM6… Oh well, back to mainlining electricity
Omg wow! Definitely going to try this a bit later on. My Nexus has HORRIBLE battery life.
Did it on my Nexus about 2 months ago and I probably got about 50% battery gain, remember to do it again at least every 2-3 months…
Do you know if this has any bad “lasting” effects?
I have found no bad effects in the least.

Your tutorial IS FANTASTIC!!! Thanks very much!!
One suggestion: if you want to improve your battery life you can use Power Control application (for example, Extended Controls) it has many toggles to control main settings (Wifi, GPS, AutoSync, APN, etc…).

Original post you were referring to Cameron. Hope this helps everyone. You also left the part out where you have to wipe battery stats at one point >;]
OMG – how did you find that post? Seriously, I searched for HOURS AND HOURS, trying to find it. Thankfully I had copied down what I had. I will edit the post to include the wiping of battery stats, thank you.

I tried this on my Desire, and it seemed to make a small difference in the rate that the battery discharges, However, please note that the phone powers down at 7-8% whereas before, it powered down at 0%. So I’m not sure how much of it is psychologoo…psychlogo…physicolog…in your head.
Yeah, this is because you didn’t wipe the battery status after, so now it thinks your 7-8% is the 0%. Do it again and wipe the status, and you should be good.
You also have to do it every month or so (depending how often you charge your phone from a non-0% status)
Scott.. how often should you wipe the batt stats? also: do you do it before charging or after or etc?
Every time you go through the process explained, after you are done, wipe the status so it knows where the new 100% is. It depends on your usage, if you are a power user, probably once a month, casual would be once every three months… Not an exact science…
Well considering I went from 8 hours tops to almost 18 hours, with no changes in how I used the phone, I’m fairly certain it was not psychological.

It seems to be kind of working on a myTouch Slide
I worked at a battery store for two years, this doesn’t make any sense and would not increase the battery life. If anything you are throwing it out of sync with the phone’s memory. In order to sync it back up so the battery dies at 0% you should charge for 8 hours, discharge completely and charge back up for another 8 hours. For first initial charge you should charge for at least 12 hours so the phone recognizes the batteries full capacity.
You can try Refine Efficiency (http://refineandroid.doodlekit.com/). It’s not directly to save your battery, but it’s features can assist with it:
- cache cleaner (root and non root(individually)), no sd card cache support;
- market history cleaner;
- task killer;
- start up manager (root and non root(no guarantee));
- strong scheduling features.
Also browser history cleaner.
Did this on my EVO last night and today. I’ll let you know how it goes. Thanks!

Tried this With my galaxy s and it didn’t make a difference….too bad I was hoping.
This is the process for HTC phones, every manufacturer has a different process. Some are just discharge fully an recharge the phone over and over again.

At least it isn’t harmful, but why someone would post an obviously bogus report is beyond me. I tried it because it is easily tested, but also easily fails!
It has worked with my phones. I would not post something if it did not work and I had not tried it. I’ve also had at least 10 other people who have had good luck with this.
what about this procedure should improve your battery life? seems like you want it to work so it does…..baaaaaaa

Doesn’t it seem a little goofy having to go through this procedure? Its kind of like putting tinfoil on your rabbit ears to get better reception for your 800 inch state of the art LCD/plasma flat screen.. if the battery life can be improved by doing something like this, then why isn’t there a software update that would remedy the problem as well?
I agree, but all LI batteries have slight memory issues (even though they say they don’t) not as bad as the old ones, but this is a nice way to get it back where it should be. When a manufacturer is QA testing batteries, they have to give some charge, and that can sometimes have adverse effects.
Procedure seems to lack precision, quote:
“Step 3. Unplug it, turn it on for 2 minutes. Plug it in and charge for 1 additional hour.”
Turn it on for 2 min suggest to turn it off after 2 min, then ‘plug it in, and charge for 1 additional hour’ – am I correct?
It could be written either way. This is directly taken from the forum post….by HTC. It is entirely possible that things may have been translated poorly. I really don’t know.

Did this to my G1, and NOW i can maximize the 1400MAh battery I have.

one question? how long the battery last for you? before and after this trick?
Did this to my G1, and NOW i can maximize the 1400MAh battery I have.
I can say my phone can almost last me the whole day now. Finally lol.
Did the opposite on my MT4G. Went from 24-26Hrs Battery to 10! Do not do on your MT4G. I will not be doing this on my G2 =/
Worked for my Nexus One. I went 22 hours and I used it moderately.
is this workable on the desire hd? i might give it a go later see wot happens
apart from not resetting stats because i dont know how to i tried the above and it hasnt made any differnce
I tried this on my Milestone anyways, despite the fact that it turns on when plugged in… I havn’t noticed any change though… but I did this only yesterday, so changes may take longer to become apparent.
Awesome results on my Evo. It’s been on standby for 44 hours and is at 40% battery. Previously it would last less than 24 hours on standby. I’m now trying on my Nexus One.
I did this today for my Droid Incredible. It’s been off the charger for 55 minutes with the music player, manually checked emails, and Internet surfing. My battery life(through the Battery Indicator app) shows 70% battery remaining. I followed directions… also, I am using a Seidio 1750 maH battery… I hope I see improvement soon… maybe after the next battery recharge?
When you say charge the phone for x amount of time, is this via usb or wall power?
