Quick Look: KustHome, a Potential Contender in the Home Replacement World

4

After finding TAT Home and SPB Mobile Shell 5.0, I knew there had to be some company or some person working on something different that we haven’t all seen. I stumbled across two alternate replacements that I haven’t seen before. This one is called KustHome and is currently free in the market as it is still in a beta stage. Even in a beta stage, though, the application runs pretty smoothly.

There are currently nine different themes to choose from. All have their own unique twist to how you interact with your home screen and each with a unique look. I think these guys are on the right track to bringing something new to the market. Here is a quick look at three of the main home screens from three different themes.

They are pretty different aren’t they? I didn’t run into any personal issues when I was playing around with this application. Everything seemed to be pretty usable. The app drawers look a little different and on some of the themes you might not notice right away how to even access your apps. For instance, the middle image above. That theme is called Origami. That strange little red Android guy on the bottom right of the screen is actually the app drawer. Pretty cool, really.

Like I said before this is still in beta so it may or may not be what you are looking for in a permanent replacement yet. I have a feeling though that the developers behind this application would sure like to see more people downloading and involved in making it something amazing.

Here’s a quick little ditty from the market from AxDroid LLC, the developers behind this idea who coincidentally also brought Taskiller Free which so many people used.

KustHome is a new home replacement.

Actually in beta, themes download will be free until the end of the beta.

KustHome allow people to make skins for the home screen with images and totally skinnable components like battery level or clocks.

WARNING : beta may be unstable : do not make this your default home screen.

I located the developer thread in xda-developers. It doesn’t look like many people ever really got into working with this at all. This application was published back in June and hasn’t seen much interest. The devs did do an update just three weeks ago, so have no fear they didn’t abandon the project. I’m not sure if the devs are looking for some more help or at least some more themes to be put together or not. If you are interested I’d sure like to see this application start making some new waves.

What are your thoughts on this application? Do you think it has a future once it’s out of beta? I hope so.

Time for an update. I am the proud father of three, 2, 8, and 11. I finally just moved up from the Samsung Vibrant to the Samsung Galaxy S III...... Let me tell you, it is mind blowing. I love Android, I love tech and I love my family. Not in that order though. I work to hard, play even harder and take care of all that are around me when I can.
