Samsung to update Galaxy S series to Gingerbread in Feb 2011, Supposedly

You may have the seen the article posted a couple of weeks ago from an Indian source claiming that the Samsung Galaxy S series of phones would be getting upgraded to Gingerbread.  Well, that tweet has since magically vanished from Twitter.  I may have been removed by Samsung themselves, which could indicate some truth to the rumor, or it could have simply been vicious rumor mongering, we’ll never really know.

Now, YouMobile is saying that they received independent confirmation that Gingerbread will be rolled out in February 2011 to a Galaxy S near you.

JOSEPHWS today posted the following information on YouMobile site:

Well, Today we Got a Confirmation That Samsung Galaxy S is Getting Another Update probably on February,2011 may be Earlier and this update will have Android 2.3 Gingerbread onboard

Without any REAL confirmation as to who the source of the information was, we can only take this as rumor, but with the release of the Google Nexus S and Google already dropping the AOSP source for Gingerbread, it’s not past the realm of possibility.  If it’s not done by Google / Samsung themselves pretty soon, you can rest assured that the community will.

    Ya know…months ago, we all we waiting for the update to Froyo. then they tell us today that Froyo is pushed back because of problems. Now you are telling us that Galaxy phone are getting Gingerbread sometime in Feb. LIES I TELL YOU ALL LIES…YOU GUYS COME OUT WITH SOME OF THE BEST MACHINERY BUT “EPIC FAIL” IN THE UPDATES FOR THESE ROMS. I AM TO THE POINT WHERE I AM ABOUT TO SAY F#$% IT AND FLASH THE ROMs AND ADD IT MYSELF BECAUSE YOU GUYS HAVE TAKEN SO DAMN LONG JUST TO GET NOWHERE.

  2. Samsung has NEVER been good about updating their phones. For those of you who don’t know the Behold 2 was actually supposed to keep up with any update android could throw at it. It turns out they never even made the eclair drivers. It was guaranteed by Samsung and where is it now? Oh but they dont sell more devices if they keep updating. I hope I’m not the only one who will never buy a Samsung phone again, they’re garbage.

      your not the only one, the grass is way greener on HTC’s side of the fence and its turning out that LG is also up to up to date bringing their phones up to speed.

  3. You’d think that Samsung would pay attention to their customers when they demand to be kept up with current updates, but it must be that they are selling a ton of phones and just think that those of wanting the upgrades are small percentage and minimal risk.

  4. I believe that Samsung considers the carriers to be their customers. The code for Verizon’s Galaxy S Fascinate I500 has been on http://opensource.samsung.com for sometime, so Samsung did the work, but I can’t get confirmation from the Verizon Reps on Verizon’s own forums about if we will ever get an upgrade.

    I have zero hopes of getting it. Samsung created Froyo for Galaxy S a while ago*, but we didn’t get it. It will probably be the same for Gingerbread.

    * Yes, there are US versions of Galaxy S Froyo code at http://opensource.samsung.com . Custom ROMs currently start with a captured leak, or OTA. Since that hasn’t happened, no ROMs, and probably no ROMs in February either.

    Prove me wrong Verizon, please.

    Can I make a ROM based on the http://opensource.samsung.com code that Samsung wrote for Verizon? I don’t know. I am tempted to try.

    Samsung = Garbage

    got samsung vibrant us version.
    lags soo much. no froyo.

  6. I just got FroYo on my Vibrant, what, last week?… and they’re talking Gingy already? Maybe a year from now we’ll see it, but February? LOL Oh man are they funny.

  7. Cryevisu123

    This would be great but I think it unlikely. Samsung’s track record makes me skeptical. Either way, the devs will have cooked up 2.3 ROMs operational by that time anyway so many of us will have 2.3 regardless.
    Currently I am running ASOPish 1.1 with 2.3 enhancements and loving it!

  8. Kent1

    Ha! Keep dreamin. If sammy can’t put froyo out what makes you think gingerbread is coming. Haven’t we all learned our lesson. We will be lucky if we even get froyo. The way they are going the behold will get froyo before galaxy s. Lol

  9. Jeff

    Yeah… I won’t hold my breath. As much as I like my Vibrant I won’t buy the Nexus S or any other phone put out by Samshaft in the future. Even though the Nexus S will be updated by Google I will no longer support Samshaft because of the lies they hand to their customers. The Galaxy S phones should have been updated to Froyo long ago and we are still waiting.
    SAMSHAFT=EPIC FAIL!

    • urmom

      wouldn’t SHAMsung be better to make fun of em??? lol…just sayin….calm down man….its not like not having 2.2 is gonna kill ya….if you really want flash, use skyfire…..

  10. tg

    I’m going to wait until January to see if my vibrant will finally get froyo. After that, it’s custom rom. Sick and tired of the waiting game. My next android phone will come from htc, motorola, or lg. Samsung can kiss my ass after this experience. Gingerbread Feb. 2011? I’m sure all galaxy s users of all variants that read just read this just smirked and went “hmmph”.

  11. Recasper

    So glad I decided to go with a G2… So very, very glad. haha

  12. Patricio

    SURE WE WILL GET THE UPDATE IN FEBRUARY 2011 ALWAYS SAMSUNG KEEP THE PROMISE AND KEEP ALL THEIR DEVICES UP TO DATE
    SAMSUNG DON’T GIVE A #$%@# ABOUT US, SO DO NOT BELIEVE ANY CRAP, WE WILL NEVER GET ANY UPDATED FROM SAMSUNG.

  13. MooMoo

    why dont we just say screw Android all together.. its a marketing tool to make use buy more stuff.. its never going to stop and neither are the updated or out dated phones..
