Just yesterday we heard from Cole Brodman, T-Mobile’s CMO. He made a statement that the Android 2.2 Froyo update for the T-Mobile Vibrant was coming “very soon”. Coming from a guy in his position, and not from Samsung, gave me a little more hope then usual. According to PCMag, the update is supposed to start trickling out of the T-Mobile system and start showing up on users devices.
All I can say is, “It’s about time.” I have no doubt that a lot of the resent up-roar from consumers prompted this to happen as fast as it did. As with any news of an OTA, there are is still a bit of hesitation from us. Saying and doing go a long way. With the sheer number of devices registered to the network, the process is sure to take a few weeks.
Now the question that needs to be answered is, what took so long. Brodman had an answer for that, “It was a quality control and timing issue. The biggest challenge is integration and customization.” Brodman continues on to say that smartphone users expecting frequent updates is “new to us and we’re going to have to step up and change the way we do things.” This is promising news. Maybe after they say the stats rolling around putting them at the bottom of the update chain has sparked some interest. After all, how you can call your selves the ‘most highly regarded service company’, if you can’t get a simple update out to your devices.
T-Mobile is also looking at ways to make the process work more efficiently. As of right now they are hoping t be able to push updates out to support devices in 3-5 months of Google releasing it to the public. They want to give themselves a little cushion due to complications that arise from manufacturer skins and T-Mobile custom applications, such as Wi-Fi calling. Now if we can just get both of them to lay off the custom garbage and just go true Android, the world would be a happier place.
We have waited this long for it to come. Whats a few days of waiting for your OTA at this point?. I will ultimately believe it when I see it. If you have received the OTA, please let us know. Until I see people reporting about it actually on their device, I file this as a rumor.
As far as the rest of the poor Galaxy S owners out there on other carriers, US Cellular reported March as their update time frame. Verizon, AT&T and sprint have yet to make an announcement of any kind. Hopefully you will see your dose of Froyo soon though.
UPDATE: Looks like Samsung Kies Mini is the method for update. At least for right now. Still unsure if this will be the only method available. If anyone out there has seen an OTA please let us know.

Do we know if it’s updated through kies? or over the air? I’m glad t mobile stepped up, I was nearly ready to just root my phone and be done with it..heh
honestly, rooting is the best thing i’ve ever done.. I’m not on Tmobile, I’m on Cellular South and XDA forums has made my Galaxy S AWESOME…
The Vibrant forums have some awesome DEVS and they’ll make stock 2.2 look S-L-O-W, i promise if you take the time and read up Rooting is easy and if you READ, and follow everyone’s instructions you can always go back..
here’s the key to a better phone… http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=708
hmm…my sister wouldnt let me root her phone so she is on stock still…i only applied one click lag fix back in the day…guess she gets to see the wonders of froyo at last..plus she was complaoining to me that her phone was not responding well when she was on a call…and blaming me for applying oclf…try to explain its not my fault…
we have root..we have team whiskey..we have trigger…we have the community..we dont need samsung or t-mobile
Screw that!!!! Nero V5 Is like a Ferrari. I’m sure the 2.2 update won’t be able to keep up with it. Plus no bloatware.
Not to be a negative nanny, but I hope Samsung didn’t rush the update and push out a piece of crap just to appease everyone. And when all is said and done, I think the Froyo excitement will last for 5 minutes once installed.
I hope this is true cuz they keep saying things and never gets done. I am crossing my fingers on this one and hope for the best.
I have a vibrant and i am currently upgrading through Kies as of 10:30am mt time. http://yfrog.com/gy2nwxlj this is the only reason i checked Kies.
Yep i’m on Froyo now.
Can anyone who is upgrading confirm the version? Was KA6 the final?
Ironically I used multiple roms from xda/Team Whiskey and I just downgraded from that back to Stock and got 2.2 through Kies. They seem to have left out the roms for those who like what they call “bloatware”. I mean really, the phone is plenty fast enough to not cut out all the extra apps. And really, why take apps like Amazon MP3 off.
