VLC Beta (NEON version) is the complete name, and like it desktop version, it should play almost anything you can throw at it, including network streaming. It also sports support for multi-track audio and subtitles, auto-rotation and gestures to control volume.
It also includes a widget for audio control, supports audio headsets control, covert art and a complete audio media library.
This first version is a port of the iOS version, basically just to get it up and running for the VLC team start working and improving, pretty much everything will change. At least the UI, even if it’s horrible, it’s not an obvious iOS design, so at least there’s that.
The developers are really trying to get people to understand that this is Beta, inclufing the following sentence about the app’s behaviour: “It might kill your kitten, destroy your house and start the mayan apocalypse”, ending with the obvious “Use at your own risk”
There are still plenty of missing features as stated by the developers in their Play Store page:
• The basic User Interface will change;
• Performance improvements are missing;
• Some audio issues might occur;
• Hardware decoding works only with a limited set of hardware;
• Other unknown issues.
Personally, I’m very happy with MX player, so I’m going to wait for the final version before doing any comparison.
If you want to give it a try, are a VLC fan, a power user, hacker or just in the market for a new player and want to try very single option out there, here’s the link for the download. But remember this is a very Beta version.
